About IG and CMC Markets

CMC Markets is considerably older than IG, with CMC launched in 1989 and IG in 1974.

Both brokers are publicly traded and comply with MIFID-ESMA (a regulator in the European Union) but aren’t regulated by the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission.

Thanks to their considerable experience, both companies have a high trust score, though IG complies with more commodity regulators. It’s worth noting that while you can use either broker via their proprietary platforms, only IG has a platform for MAC users.

IG Markets vs. CMC Markets: Which Broker Offers Better Pricing?

Most brokers have a well-defined pricing strategy. Let’s take a closer look.

Unlike CMC Markets, IG only offers floating spreads. The average spreads start at 0.6 pips, with some differentiation based on what you’re trading in. If you’re trading in stocks, the commission can be as low as $3 per trade. What’s great about this company is that it doesn’t charge deposit or withdrawal fees.

CMC Markets offers many spreads with an average starting point of 0.7 pips, depending on the currency pairs involved. The company charges funding fees of around 1% for credit cards and 0.6% for debit cards. CMC Markets can charge as little as £9 per stock transaction in the UK.

IG is the leading provider in this category. They offer lower fees and don’t charge customers for funding transactions.

Winner: IG Markets

IG vs. CMC Markets: Which Market Selection is Better?

These trading platforms are an excellent way to work with a Forex broker or participate in CFD trading. However, they offer different trading instruments and investment options.

Let’s compare IG vs. CMC Markets. IG offers the following:

  • Forex pairs: IG currently offers more than 80 currency pairs;
  • Commodities: You can choose from nearly 15 different trading commodities;
  • Indices: If you like trading world indices, you can choose from more than 80 options at IG.
  • Stocks: This trading platform offers up to 12,000 different stocks for trading.
  • Bonds: At IG, you can select one of two bond types; the US Dollar Basket or the German Bond
  • Crypto: You can trade cryptocurrency at IG, with almost 10 different crypto trading options.

The CMC Markets trading platform offers:

  • Forex pairs: CMC Markets offers over 65 currency pairs
  • Commodities: This platform offers nearly 50 different commodities.
  • Indices: You can trade on up to 100 world indices at CMC.
  • Stocks: CMC Markets offers up to 9,000 different stocks.
  • Bonds: The Next Generation platform only offers the US T-bond
  • Crypto: The CMC brokers offer more than five different cryptocurrency trading options.

CMC Markets offers the best options for traders in commodities and indices. IG offers the best diversity for Forex traders, and professional traders will benefit most from IG. Both brokers comply with the regulations set by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Winner: Tie

CMC Markets vs. IG Markets: Funding Options

Whether you’re taking advantage of retail investor accounts or spread betting, having access to the right funding options is essential.

At both IG and CMC Markets, you can use the following popular payment methods:

  • PayPal
  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • Bank Transfer

CMC Markets tops this category. IG requires a deposit of at least £250, which CMC doesn’t.

Winner: CMC Markets

CMC Markets vs. IG Markets: Social Trading and Trade Signals

Social trading is a form of copy trading that allows you to replicate strategies implemented by traders with more experience. Unlike IG, CMC Markets keeps trading central with a forum for discussing live trades. IG doesn’t have an integrated social trading platform.

Along with IG, CMC Markets offers an array of trade signals allowing you to base notifications on either fundamental or technical analysis. There’s no real distinction between the two brokers here.

CMC Markets leads this category thanks to its proprietary platform for social trading.

Winner: CMC Markets

CMC Markets vs. IG Markets: Mobile Trading Options

Many retail traders and other investors trading Forex enjoy the convenience that trading apps bring to the game. Both IG and CMC Markets offer mobile trading on Android and iOS but not Windows.

Unlike IG, CMC Markets doesn’t offer trading signals on mobile, which could be a serious handicap if your trading strategies rely heavily on signals.

The only real difference between the mobile capabilities of these two brokers is that CMC Markets doesn’t offer trading signals on mobile. That’s one of IG’s positive attributes.

Winner: IG Markets

Which Broker Is Better? IG Markets or CMC Markets?

Based on the results of our comparison review, both of these brokers will exceed your expectations. They offer many trading options, mobile trading, and plenty of trading tools.

Both CMC Markets and IG Markets are valuable to high-volume traders and low-volume traders alike. While IG has slightly lower fees, more spread diversity, and mobile trade signals, CMC Markets doesn’t have a minimum deposit and gives access to social trading.

Both of these brokers offer a well-designed platform for trading CFDs, Forex, and other commodities. Ultimately, choosing a broker depends on the trader’s needs.

Trading CFDs, FX, and cryptocurrencies involves a high degree of risk. All providers have a percentage of retail investor accounts that lose money when trading CFDs with their company. You should consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money and whether you understand how CFDs, FX, and cryptocurrencies work. Cryptocurrencies can widely fluctuate in prices and are not appropriate for all investors. Trading cryptocurrencies is not supervised by any EU regulatory framework. Your capital is at risk.
